The summary of this short review: I love the movie, Bruce Almighty. I just watched it again for the millionth time. You should watch it too. Especially if you are feeling blue, if your country is happening to you or if you generally need to watch a funny, inspirational, feel-good movie. It is the perfect movie to get your mind out of the rut and rethink things while laughing.
I remember one the times I watched Bruce Almighty (2003). I was with Mr. Charles Ayede, my sub-dad. He had been a journalist, was a journalist himself so he got all the inner jokes. He took time to explain several things that I might have missed – like the roles of the editors, the teleprompters etc etc. It was a fun moment because growing up, we were used to him telling us to watch news. 9 o’clock network news which we would have to explain later. Even at that moment, it was usually ‘Change the channel to Aljazeera.’ So, being able to share a movie with him was special. And wow, he laughed hard. Indeed, it is hard to watch classic Jim Carrey in a comic role and not piss yourself laughing. See, you would not understand why I am doing this long introduction but if you understand that Dadi (mentioned above) was not much of a movie man, and was mainly the news or documentaries kind of person, yet sat through the entire movie and enjoyed it, then you would get that truly this movie is not just a movie for movie people but for everyone.
The movie is inspirational. So inspirational and you have the lovable Jennifer Aniston, the equally funny Steve Carrell (the now famous voice of Gru), and gosh, Morgan Freeman playing the role of God.
The movie is about a guy down on his luck, like most of us. He believes that God does not know his job and is picking on him like a bully taking on a small ant. Eventually, God decides to talk to him and give him a chance to see things through a different lens while also getting great power. But as they say in the Spiderman movies, with great power comes great responsibility. And that is where the conflict, the humour, and everything else comes to play.

There are so many lessons to be learnt in this movie, so many lovely lines (You want to be a miracle, son. Be the miracle), so many laughs to catch, music and overall great entertainment. Oh, did I mention romance? When you see Jennifer Aniston, you can be sure you would get a great dose of that. Her role is that of a woman who really loves her man, wants the best for him and stands by him no matter what. Even when he is stupid. She is the true lover, and I am sure several men and women might relate to that character. The real ‘a person in love, another mumu born.’ I have been that character many times, and I am still that person now. *sighs, then winks*
It is awesome that the movie is not preachy. You take what you can take from it. And I took a bit.
One is reminded of things we should really value in the grand scheme of things. I think we need that a lot, especially now. We need to take time off to just ask ourselves: in this finite time, what matters really? And as we move on, are we doing what we are meant to be doing? For ourselves, our loved ones, for wherever we find ourselves?
This movie is definitely for everyone, and I mean everyone. Plus, there’s a sequel called EVAN ALMIGHTY, available on Netflix. That’s another lovely movie, has more quotable quotes and stuff but I prefer BRUCE maybe because of Dadi and other stuff… You should see both though. Other movie you should also absolutely watch is THE BUCKET LIST (Morgan Freeman & Jack Nicholson), Shawshank Redemption (Morgan Freeman), The Love Guru (Mike Myers), The Adam Project (Ryan Reynolds), The Upside (Kevin Hart)… I could go on and on but if you need more inspirational movie reviews or suggestions, hit the comment and let’s see if I can be of help.
To borrow from the movie, that my good people, is how the cookie crumbles. In whatever you do, however you go, may life treat you kind, may you be reminded of what really matters, and even more, have the courage to work/walk in the knowledge of that remembrance. May you find light in every darkness and beauty crown your worth always. Be a miracle.
I should see this movie again. Can’t reme3any lines at all.
Thanks for this review/reminder.
The cast is actually one that should get anyone to love the movie.
I will holla when I watch it again.

I go dey wait to share notes. It is an all-time classic. Awesome cast, great acting, simple but resonating plot. I am trying to deliberately watch mind growing and inspirational movies at this time. Especially the ones with comedy. Need to detox too much negativity and remind myself of what matters in life.
