as life goes by (a poem) by Hyginus Ekwuazi

Next year… next

birthday…. next

Christmas….

and time sneaked in
unannounced, uninvited
sweeping it all away:

the years
the birthdays
the seasons—

leaving behind, only the fragments
of the memory

of a life and

of a face

too blurred for memory…

in the twinkling of a lifetime.
